Who we are
Roll Back Amnesty is comprised of current and former members of Amnesty International, from all over the globe. We come from many different backgrounds, many different faiths, and differing opinions on the issue of abortion. We all however agree that Amnesty International has made a grave error that needs to be remedied. As the movement progresses, we will publish the names and contact details of members in the various Amnesty International Sections, around the world.
What We Do
Much in the same way that Amnesty International itself operates, Roll Back Amnesty seeks to highlight and persuade others of the validity of its position through open discussion and publicity. As current members of Amnesty International we will also be pursuing constitutional avenues with regard to this issue at both Sectional and ICM (International Council Meeting) level.
What we want
Roll Back Amnesty does not want to exist. Roll Back Amnesty has but one goal – to repeal the recent policy adopted at the Amnesty International ICM 2007 with regard to the issue of sexual and reproductive rights, specifically in relation to the issue of abortion.
Roll Back Amnesty is neither a pro-life nor pro-choice movement. It is however in favour of Amnesty International and its continuing work in support of human rights around the globe.
Roll Back Amnesty is neither ignorant or indifferent to the suffering of women around the world who have been subject to various and grievous human rights abuses, including rape and forced pregnancies. However, owing to the unrelenting nature of the controversy that surrounds the issue of abortion, it is the sincere belief of Roll Back Amnesty that the movement has made a mistake in taking a position that has predictably divided the membership worldwide. As a result of this change in policy and the ensuing difficulties, it is our considered opinion that the people who benefit the most from it, are human rights abusers around the world, who now find that they face an Amnesty International weakened by ongoing division, resignations and the break down of relationships with other human rights partners.
Roll Back Amnesty activists are exclusively, current and former members of Amnesty International, drawn from both sides of the pro-choice and pro-life divide, but who have decided to form this movement as people of good conscience who sincerely believe that Amnesty International has been and will continue to be, profoundly damaged by the decision to take a position on the issue of abortion.
Roll Back Amnesty will cease to exist the day Amnesty International reverts back to its previous position of neutrality on the issue of abortion. All of us at Roll Back Amnesty want that to happen as soon as possible, so that all of us and Amnesty International can return in partnership to the combat of human rights abuses around the world.
